Render node internals

this is a tracking ticket -- individual tasks depending.

Clarify and work out the most important technical details of the render node implementation. This ticket is not aiming at the concepts, the APIs towards builder or backend, and also not regarding the overall functionality of the render process. Rather it is to remind me to sort out the various started and planned technical bits related to the nodes.
